Did you always want to be in the media? If not, what other careers were on the horizon?
My career in the media has evolved almost organically. I started off my career working within the public relations industry, and then kind of fell into working with The Booklet. One of my friends from when I was on exchange in Switzerland during university works on the French end and I used to read her articles all the time to keep practicing my French. When they launched their English site last April, I began writing for them on a freelance basis and as the site has grown, so has my role working with it as well. I’ve always loved food, fashion, beauty and travel, so it is a dream come true to be able to share my passions with our readers.
Where would you like to be five years from now?
Hopefully still living in Toronto but with a few extra stamps on my passport. So far I’ve explored 30 countries, but I’m itching to head over to South America or trek through South East Asia.
What are your favourite media outlets, not including your own?
Read: Refinery 29 // Buzzfeed // Darling Magazine
Listen: Serial // This American Life // Call Your Girlfriend (Podcasts)
Watch: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver
What rule(s) do you live your life by?
‘Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter, and those who matter don’t mind.’ – Bernard M. Baruch.
What’s the most important tip you can give PR pros?
It is so important to find a healthy work/life balance. It’s such a great feeling to find a job you love, but it is essential to always make time in your day for yourself and to do things that are important to you.
Apathy, complacency and Uggs.
Burritos, bourbon and black ankle booties.
I’m a bookworm so I always have a few books on the go. Right now, my favourite books are “Where’d You Go Bernadette” by Maria Semple, “Love in the Time of Cholera” by Gabriel García Márquez and “The Rosie Project” by Graeme C. Simsion.
Best place on earth?
Oh that’s a tough one. I love travelling and exploring new places so it’s very hard to pick just one. But so far, one of my favourite cities has to be Copenhagen, Denmark. I fell in love instantly with the clean design aesthetic of this bicycle-friendly city!
Can I pick two? It would be, hands down, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. Although I’d be laughing to hard to actually eat during this dinner.
VSCO Cam, it’s a bloggers best friend for editing pictures quickly on the go!
Pool or ocean?
Ocean, all of the way. My Dad was born in Barbados so I have a special love for the surf, sun and sand.
