Joanne Jin’s official title at SHARP Magazine is fashion coordinator, but she wears a lot of different hats. Some days she will be prop styling or wardrobe styling, planning and market editing the watch pages, interviewing for the Heroes of Menswear page, starting to write here and there, and handling some of the posts on Instagram. When she’s not working, she likes to go on weekend road trips, catch up with her friends, go to the park to soak up the sun and people watch while eating ice cream. Lately she’s been spending the majority of her spare time redecorating her place in the west-end where she resides with a Bengal cat named Tigger.
Did you always want to be in the media? If not, what other careers were on the horizon?
My grandfather was the Editor-In-Chief of what would basically be the equivalent of National Post for South Korea for many years and my uncle is a writer and a poet. In the back of my mind I’ve always thought being involved with a publication would be cool but fashion and interior design has been my passion. I’m a very tactile person. I love feeling the materials and products that I’m working with. I went to school for studio art and textile design thinking I want to be a fashion designer. After university I had a brief stint working for a major Canadian fashion company and realized designing commercial fashion wasn’t really for me. What I learned at OCAD is more suitable for working for a couturier, doing tedious stuff.
Where would you like to be five years from now?
I would like to continue working in the publishing industry and continue styling. I really like producing too… I’m not sure.
Any advice for people getting started in your industry?
I highly advise doing internships if you can financially afford it. At one point in my life I juggled two jobs and an internship but it helped me narrow down where I wanted to go with my career.
What are your favourite media outlets, not including your own?
I like the New York Times, Man of the World, Style.com, Refinery 29, Hypebeast, and Domino. Sometimes Apartment Therapy, HighSnobiety, W, and Monocle.
I like listening to CBC radio—I love Anna Maria Tremonti. Her voice is perfect for the radio/podcast. Sometimes on weekends I watch random TED Talks in bed before I have to start my day.
Best interview you’ve ever had?
I haven’t had one that I would call best yet.
Best advice you’ve ever been given?
Say “Yes” to everything even if you don’t know how to do it. (Obviously depending on the circumstances.)
What rule(s) do you live your life by?
I work hard and play hard. Cliché I know but this really is the way I do things. When I’m focused on something, I’m really focused. I fully immerse myself into the task that I’m doing so that I can give it my all.
What’s the most important tip you can give PR pros?
Don’t get names wrong. Don’t call people by pet names, it’s unprofessional unless you’re 89 years old.
Best experience you’ve had with a PR pro? We love to hear about wins.
I’ve worked with some amazing people in PR and those are the people who I barely have to follow up with. They are on top of things even if they don’t have an answer for me at the time. I also appreciate those who hustle. Hustlers who have things under control and keep their cool.
Pet names (when you barely know them, you are younger than them, etc…), name droppers, try hards, loud obnoxious people, copy cats and fashion victims = the worst.
Good conversations, great wine, perfect lining/finishing job inside a garment, short and sweet trips, prop styling, wardrobe styling, and my bengal cat, Tigger.

Best place on earth?
Playa del Carmen, but I really want to go to Bora Bora or Maldives. I think those two places might beat Playa del Carmen. However I heard from a lot of people that Barcelona is pretty awesome and I’m heading there at the end of this year!
I would say Nicole Richie but I have a feeling I won’t get to eat much from her giving me stitches from laughing. I would love to dine with Jenna Lyons of J.Crew. I’ve met her and conversed with her twice now but it would be nice to do that over food and drinks. I would also love to sit down with Linda Rodin. These ladies are so stylish!
My mom is my hero for bringing my brother and I to a brand new country as a single mother. I think that was very brave.
Instagram all the way!
Pool or ocean?
Both! I have a thing for infinity pools but I always want to get better at surfing. I grew up living by the ocean so it has a special place in my heart.
