When the temperature drops, our hair goes through a bit of a shock. It’s colder, it’s drier, and our hair is still recovering from the damage it endured throughout the summer months (re: sunshine and sea salt sprays). Add constant blow drying, curling and straightening to the mix, and you have yourself the perfect recipe for lifeless locks. Taking all of this into consideration, we’re giving our hair a heat-styling break and some much needed TLC. Not only will your locks appreciate the love, they will also feel rejuvenated, hydrated and brought back to life. Here’s a list of five products you can use to get you through your hot tool hiatus.

REDKEN No Blow Dry Cream

It’s no secret that hot tools have become an invaluable necessity when it comes to taming unruly locks. However, styling tools can (clearly) take a toll on your hair, leaving it dry, dull and prone to breakage. That’s why we are excited for the new REDKEN No Blow Dry Cream – available in stores and online in early March. Catering to three distinct hair types (airy cream, bossy cream and just right cream), achieve amazing style, natural movement and a no product feel after just one use. Whether you’re tight on time or just taking a break from hot tools, creating an amazing air dry look has never been easier.

Revlon Professionals Uniq One Hair Treatment

This classic and super affordable leave-in treatment is suitable for all hair types. It hydrates, repairs, protects and boosts shine. It also tames frizz, detangles and adds volume to limp strands. This treatment is perfect for weeks when you’re choosing to turn down the heat because it can be used wet or dry, making it is an absolute must-have in our hair care routine. After several uses your hair feels smoother, silkier and healthier with added shine. For those of you who have coloured hair, try Olaplex for a deeper, more intense surge of hydration.

Ouai Hair Oil

One of the worst things that results from not heat styling your hair (especially throughout the winter months) is frizz. However, hair guru and celebrity stylist Jen Atkins has created the perfect product to combat those pesky flyaways. The Ouai Hair Oil is a serious game changer. Neither slippery nor greasy, this hair oil is the perfect consistency necessary to tame frizz, smooth baby hairs and add shine. To minimize frizzy hair in the morning, we recommend sleeping in a top knot/messy bun tied with a scrunchy. Not only does this protect your hair from breakage, it also eliminates added friction that results in added frizz. Other favourites include the Moroccan Oil Treatment Light or the Bumble and Bumble Invisible Oil.

Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray

This genius product is a hybrid between a dry shampoo and a texturizing spray. Described as a smart, innovative product that makes good hair better, it is a must have in any hair junky’s arsenal. Our favourite way to use it is fresh out the shower to add texture and grit to the hair, but it also lends texture and body to second-day hasn’t-been-washed hair as well. Use this hair-boosting product if you want to look runway ready the next time you pull off your favourite toque.

Living Proof Timeless Plumping Mousse

Gone are the days when mousse made hair sticky, tacky and hard. Perfect for creating volume and texture in your locks, mousse is best applied on damp hair at the roots, but can also be used for additional hold or to style tousled waves on drier hair. One of the easiest ways to style your hair sans hot tools is via a braid. French, dutch, milk, classic – they all do the trick. Living Proof’s Timeless Plumping Mousse is great to put in your hair before braiding to add extra texture and body. We also love REDKEN’s Guts 10 Volume Spray Foam.

Getting comfortable rocking your natural hair may take some time, but it will be well worth it. Have fun experimenting with new hair styles, products and old-school hair rollers. Be sure to thank us later.

Happy Family Day Long Weekend!
