This past fashion month, we saw tons of wearable trends that nodded at every variety of personal style. From over-sized studs and silver grommets to the evolution of the bucket bag, this month was all about bold, eye-catching accessories. However, our favourite trend was subtle and offered a unique way to carry a handbag and spice up any outfit (without being overtly in your face). This year, designers went above and beyond creating innovative purses that really caught our attention. From saddle bags to backpacks, bags have totally upgraded in design and convenience. We scanned some of the most popular spring/summer 2017 catwalk collections to bring you two of our favourite purse trends – the ring handle and mix and match straps.
The Ring Handle
Gone are the days of mini cross body purses and hand held clutches. Hold on tight because this spring it’s all about the ring handle. From Chloe’s golden rings to Gucci’s multi coloured webbing, you’ll never look at purses the same way. These micro bags with high-end handles are perfect for any occasion. This simple detail can transform a militant structured duffel or plain cross body into a more fashionable statement piece without overwhelming your style. Glam up your look by pairing these bags with your favourite dress or opt for a more casual look with sneakers and distressed jeans. An added benefit? The ring handle can double up as a bracelet or cuff when worn on the wrist.
Mix and Match Straps
Another trend we saw throughout fashion month was phenomenal handles paired with unconventional bags. Ideal for women (or men) who want to add a little spunk/summer flare to their outfit (without going all crazy with the bag), a statement strap is perfect for you. Straps are the last untouched territory in the bag-embellishment department, however brands have finally began experimenting with handles… and we love it! Fendi was the first to design an a la carte strap but other coveted designers such as Proenza Schouler and Alexander Wang have hopped on the band wagon as well. Dior took this trend one step further in their latest design of the Lady Dior Bag, allowing consumers to personalize the strap by adding badges and different motifs.
If you are looking to opt for a classic style purse or wish to recycle an old favourite, spice up your outfit with a embellished strap to achieve a bold look. You can find a variety of different options in exotic leathers, braided materials or vintage guitar style embroidery on otherwise plain-leather bags. Some of our favourites include this Loewe braided strap in neon pink and the more affordable Guess reversible shoulder strap.
For now, this trend is largely limited to premier designer brands, however we definitely see this trend trickling down into contemporary stores as the weather continues to warm. Remember, whether you go supersize or micro mini, it’s all about making a bold, fresh statement in a fun and unique way!
