It’s well into the new year and we #onthefourthfloor are still digging the ethos of healthy living. Whether we’re talking about recipes, skincare or fitness routines, we are definitely still on that “new year, new you” health kick. Today we are thinking all things skincare…in specific DIY face masks. There is something so satisfying about ditching store bought, mystery-ingredient filled products and ransacking our fridges for some DIY skincare inspiration.

Masks are the one element in your skincare routine where it’s okay to switch up every once in a while. Not only are masks the perfect “in the moment” solution for (practically) any skincare mishaps, but benefits tend to appear gradually and in the long-term, which makes them easy to switch in and out. Conventional masks rely on everything from plastics and silicones to hormone disruptors and known skin irritants to “treat” problem areas. However, these three clean, totally nontoxic (and widely effective) all-star DIY masks are cheap and really work.

Ultra-Hydrating

With warmer weather on the horizon, we’re obsessed with all things hydrating. This simple, easy and delicious avocado-banana mask is the perfect fix to reveal plump, dewy, ultra-hydrated, healthier skin. Avocados are rich in antioxidants while bananas contain essential vitamins like E and C, creating the perfect concoction for hydrated, glowing skin. Pro-tip: add this mask to the roots of your hair and let sit for 15 minutes for the ultimate pamper session.

1/2 avocado

1/2 a super ripe banana

1 tablespoon olive oil

Directions: Mash together ingredients in a small bowl. With dry hands, apply a thick layer to clean skin (and neck). Leave for 10-15 minutes and wipe clean with a damp cloth. For a refreshing pick-me-up, cover and chill in the fridge for at least 30 minutes and continue with directions as follows.

Breakout Obliterating

If you struggle with acne or redness caused by blemishes, you should start experimenting with turmeric masks. Not only is turmeric great to ingest orally (in smoothies, lattes, teas, juices), it also provides added benefits when applied topically to the skin. Turmeric is an effective blackhead banisher due to its antiseptic and antibacterial properties, which fight breakouts. This powerful spice is also rich in vitamin C (a brightening property) perfect for providing a youthful glow to your skin.

1/4 teaspoon turmeric

1 tablespoon raw honey

1/4 cup greek yogurt

1 tablespoon baking soda

Juice of one (or two) lemon(s)

Directions: Banish those blackheads in five minutes flat with this quick and easy skin remedy. Combine all ingredients in a small bowl. Apply on clean skin and let sit for 10-15 minutes. If texture is to thin, add baking soda to make the mask thick and pasty or add lemon for antiseptic properties.

Extremely Exfoliating

Exfoliating masks are the perfect addition to any spring skincare routine. This brown sugar coconut face scrub is our number one, go-to mask to reveal smooth, even-toned, better functioning skin. Not only is sugar a gentle (and natural) exfoliant, raw honey and coconut oil are perfect to coat and protect the skin. Lemon serves as a natural astringent ideal for reducing redness and preventing unwanted spots.

1 tablespoon raw honey

2 tablespoons coconut oil

1 cup brown sugar

1/2 sea salt

2 tablespoons lemon juice

Directions: Combine ingredients in a bowl until it forms a paste. Apply to moist skin and allow to sit for 15 minutes. In a circular motion, use your fingertips to help slosh away dead skin cells. Rinse off with warm water. Don’t forget to follow up with your favourite moisturizer for nourished, smooth, glowy skin.

All of these masks are relatively inexpensive and super convenient… let’s be real, we definitely have all these things in our pantries right now!

Happy pampering.
