Every season, there is a go-to denim trend that makes its way into every stylish girl’s closet. This SS17 season, we saw tons of wearable denim trends that nodded at every variety of personal style. From Roberto Cavalli experimenting with different widths and washes to Dolce & Gabanna rocking sequin and pearl embellishments, the spring 2017 runways were full of fresh and exciting denim styles. However, our favourite trend was primarily featured in the Versus Versace Ready-to-Wear show, where frayed hems and distressed denim reigned. This subtle detail offers an unconventional flare an otherwise conventional closet staple. Whether you opt for a subtle frayed hem or a statement step hem, the next pair of jeans you purchase should have a non-basic hemline.
The Frayed Hem
If you’re going to invest in a single pair of jeans this season, you’ll want to rock a frayed hem. A whiskered remix on the cropped flare, the frayed hem adds a little fun and flirty vibe to the traditional nineties straight-edge jean. Whether you like your jeans cropped, flared or faded, the spring 17 frayed hem options are limitless. Perfect for casual days or summer nights, the deconstructed released-hem is a great way to add personality to an outfit without being overtly in your face. An added bonus? They are super easy to DIY too! Aim to cut your jeans about an inch above your ankle – this way if you’re wearing heels sans socks you’ll see just the right amount of skin.
The Step Hem
Gone are the days of cuffed jeans, it’s time to say hello to the step hem! This hi-lo trend has taken the denim department by storm…and we love it! This subtle but fresh new take on the traditional skinny/straight jean (which is longer in the back and shorter in the front) adds a slight edge to any look and can help balance out an otherwise fancy vibe. Perfect dressed up or down, the step hem looks great paired with a blouse and stilettos or tee and structured blazer. We’re particularly in love with this look for spring because it feels un-fussy but still fashionable and fresh. On cooler days rock the step hem with an ankle boot and oversized sweater. Pro tip: keep socks short and out of sight to reveal a little bit of skin. Or when temperatures rise, add platforms and a shoulder-baring blouse.
Street style success awaits!
