What was your first job?
Selling prestige fragrance at a department store. So, not the furthest from my current chair. It unsurprisingly shaped a lot of my sentiments toward beauty.
Best advice for people getting started in your industry?
Be authentic, check your entitlement, make connections, recognize timing, be authentic, work hard. There is no secret sauce (although Biologique Recherche P50 really does work).
What are your favourite media outlets, not including your own?
New York Magazine, The Globe and Mail, Allure, Vogue, ELLE U.S., Bon Appetit, Fast Company, Inc., The Pool, Porter, The Guardian, Jezebel, Well and Good NYC, Washington Post, Hollywood Reporter, Lainey Gossip, WhoWeekly, Sasha Answers, Savage Lovecast, Modern Love, Ted Radio Hour, S-Town, Fat Mascara, Fat Mascara, Dear Sugar, RadioLab, and Jillian Michaels.
Best interview you’ve ever had?
Kirsten Dunst was delightfully unhinged, Charlie Hunnam melted and charmed me and promised we could meet up again when he came back to film in Toronto (still checking my phone hourly for the text). There are countless perfumers who have inspired me—Bruno Jovanovic and Daniela Adrier of Prada come to mind. Most recently I had a really great love-in with Dior’s François Demachy.
That’s in the vault!
What rule(s) do you live your life by?
I don’t have specific guidelines, but I try and take the optimistic route as much as possible. I don’t wallow in a pool of regret, and strive to stress less every day.
Slow walkers, morale-depleting language, flaky mascara, lillies, and anytime raisins make their way into my baked goods.
High-impact lipstick, cleansing balms, Parisian styling tips, making connections between people, absurd food trends (sushi donuts!), Oxford commas, and stripes.
You’re boarding a plane tomorrow. Where are you headed?
Paris. I just came back and I can’t wait to go again. I will never get tired of it and plan to go until I’m too old to get on a plane.
Kourtney. Her blank expressions are really great for wrinkle reduction.
Who would be cast to play you in the movie version of your life?
I keep hearing I resemble Charlotte Casiraghi, which is kind but not accurate–am taking it anyway!
Riverdale, The Mindy Project, Girls, Suits, Scandal.
The Ripple Effect, Everybody Has Everything.
Song of the moment?
I’m always ten steps behind the coolest music but I can’t get enough of Weeknd’s Starboy album, as well as Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN and Drake’s More Life.
I lower my stress levels by checking the Zara app every week and fill up my imaginary cart, or eyeing vintage Chanel wallets-on-strings from the Real Real. But podcasts are my greatest love, and no app collates podcasts and news briefs better than Sticher. And the meditation app Headspace has helped me through some very difficult times.
One thing you can’t live without?
My baby boy, G.
