After months of snow, slush and frigid temperatures, spring is finally on the horizon. And with warmer temperatures, brings a whole new, refreshed beauty routine. While we’ve spent the latter half of 2016 layering on serums, balms and oils, warmer air and increased humidity means our skin is about to be in for a shock. Today #onthefourthfloor we’re talking all things skincare and how to prep your face and beauty regimen for the sunny days ahead! Below are five tips to spring clean your beauty routine.

It can be hard to throw out your old, beloved skin-care products, but it’s also ABSOLUTELY necessary. Whether your products are expired or just gathering dust in your beauty cabinet, the first tip would be to get rid of what you are not using. A great rule of thumb would be to start looking at expiration dates – if there is anything that’s more than a year old, TOSS IT. You don’t want to use a product that’s expired (especially sunscreen and moisturizer). Note: naturally derived products have a shorter shelf life – so ditch these every six months…just to be safe.

Updating your skincare formulas is essential at the beginning of a new season since your skin will be responding to a change in climate. That means it’s time to say sayonara to heavy creams and deep, harsh peels and welcome to gel cleansers, gel moisturizers and all things SPF! First and foremost, replacing cream and balm cleansers is the way to go for spring/summer (especially since oil and sweat start to kick into overdrive). Opting for a gel cleanser is a great and simple way to keep oils at bay. One of our favourites is the Soy Face Cleanser from Fresh – perfect for removing makeup and impurities, without stripping and drying the skin.

Toning is one step that remains consistent throughout the entire year. While some of us are still on the “toning should sting” kick, in the warmer months, it’s important to use something gentle and soothing to balance your skin’s natural pH levels. Not only will this feel ultra refreshing, usually lighter toner formulas also have moisturizing properties to ensure the skin remains hydrated and supple. We love the Algenist Hydrating Essence Toner. This hydrating toner combines alguronic acid, witch hazel and chamomile to tone and soothe skin gently creating a complexion that appears revitalized, brightened and softened. If you are looking for something a little deeper, opt for a lactic/glycolic acid toner like the Ren Glycol Radiance Renewal Mask, which doubles as a mask perfect to reduce the appearance of hyper-pigmentation, sun damage and skin texture.

Gel moisturizer is going to be your best friend when the weather starts to warm. Typically, gel formulas contain naturally soothing ingredients, which help reduce redness and irritation. Gel formulas also have the best texture to layer and mix with sunscreen. We love the affordable and amazing Belif True Cream Moisturizing Bomb. Perfect for Spring/Summer months, this moisturizer is hydrating yet light enough to use over a sunscreen or oil-based serum (if you are particularly dry). We also love the Clinque Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief Cream, which is a classic and great every day moisturizer.

Sunscreen is a spring skincare staple. Not only should you apply sunscreen to your face, it’s also important to apply sunscreen to the tops of your hands, neck and decollete. If you aren’t the biggest fan of sunscreen, try swapping out basic sunscreens for an updated formula. Opting for a more expensive variety (like this one by Sunday Riley), not only protects your skin but brings a whole slew of other benefits as well. This Cashmere sunscreen by Sunday Riley is full of antioxidants and has an SPF of 30. Not only does it feel luxurious and light on the skin, it also doesn’t leave an annoying white cast in photos. For a cheaper option, try the Sun Bum Original Lotion in SPF 30 (or above).

It’s glow time.
