It’s almost summer and that means we’ve got more sun-filled hours in the day to fill. Perhaps you’ll start a new TV show like the ridiculously addictive Riverdale (and finish it the same week), join a yoga class (and forget about it the next week), or maybe start a new book (to cater to your inner Rory Gilmore). But your life is still busy and you don’t have time to spend hours in Indigo reading the back covers of books trying to find your perfect summer read. The books on this list will make you want to change your life in so many ways, make you love your city so much more, or immerse you into a different world.
Izzy’s Eating Plan by Izzy Camilleri
We don’t know about you, but with this warm weather finally approaching, the fear is creeping into our minds: uh oh…beach body season. But fret not because Izzy’s Eating Plan is here to save the day! Izzy Camilleri is a fashion designer-turned health guru and author, best known for styling Gord Downie’s tour looks and Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada (basically our dream roster). Izzy’s e-book focuses less on fad diets and more on losing weight healthily and keeping it off. She teaches you how to look at food differently and sets out a plan with items you can get at your local grocery store. Bonus: $2 from every sale will be donated to Crohn’s and Colitis Canada. You can purchase the book here.
Why we picked it: What could be a better summer book than one that helps you get healthy and in shape?
Swap Club by Lauren Wise
If you’re looking for a steamy summer read to immerse yourself in while sitting poolside, then this is the novel for you. Based off of rumours in her hometown of Montreal as a kid, Canadian comedy writer Lauren Wise’s debut novel is about a 39 year old wife and mother, Valerie, who is bored with her life. Valerie decides to gift herself the sex life she deserves: she and her husband take up membership in a secret sex club where married couples sleep with other married couples one Saturday every month. The novel follows 12 months and 12 sexual encounters. Sex, secrets, scandal, and a bit of humour… what else could you want from a sultry summer book? You can purchase it here.
Why we picked it: Swap Club is everything we want in a fun summer read… scandal, sex, a hint of real life…perfect for the beach or pool!
The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood
While this book was released over three decades ago, it has never been more relevant. Currently a smash hit television series on Bravo, The Handmaid’s Tale follows Offred (meaning “Of Fred”), a handmaid in the Republic of Gilead whose only purpose is to breed. Vivid, disturbing, and thrilling, this gripping book (and TV series) offers frightening insight into what many believe could be the future of our own society. Handmaids are beaten, punished, and used only for bearing children as infertility is now the norm in the Commander’s households of Gilead. Desperately looking for an escape through Offred’s eyes, the novel escalates so quickly you will have a hard time putting it down. We recommend reading the novel before undoubtedly binge-watching the series. This is a must on your summer reading list. You can purchase it here.
Why we picked it: This novel has never been more relevant and great if you want to extend your addiction to the television series. Plus it’s Canadian!
I Hear She’s A Real Bitch by Jen Agg
Seeing as we frequent Rum Corner, Grey Gardens, Cocktail Bar and the Black Hoff on the regular, this memoir by Toronto restaurateur Jen Agg is HIGH on our reading list. Smart, hilarious, and poignant, Jen writes about her experience owning four vastly popular restaurants in a male-dominated industry. Get to know Jen and the Toronto restaurant culture in her memoir. You can buy it here.
Why we picked it: We love a spotlight on local Toronto talent and it’s a hilarious, honest read for someone who wants to get to know their city’s shining stars better this summer.
Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty
Seriously – Big Little Lies is all we’ve been hearing about for months. The book-turned-TV series (the newest trend) on HBO follows Madeline, Celeste, and Jane, each at different crossroads in their lives and all caught in lies that seemed “small” at the time. Addictive, funny, and scary at times, this is a novel you’re going to have a hard time putting down. If you want to be up to date about this summer’s biggest shocker, you must read this book. You can buy it here.
Why we picked it: Shocking and relatable, this novel is perfect to read on the dock instead of staying cooped up watching the TV adaption on your laptop.
