What was your first job?
My first unpaid “job” was as a production assistant’s assistant for a day when I was in high school. Basically, I found a Toronto-based music video producer on Facebook and sent her a message asking how she got to where she was (at the time, I wanted to be a producer). Luckily, she was super sweet about my creepy approach and invited me to shadow her on set for a music video she was shooting the following day. I mostly cleaned props, but it was probably the day that I knew I wanted to do something related to the media world.
My first real job in the industry was at a PR agency in Toronto where I represented various fashion and alcohol brands.
Best advice for people getting started in your industry?
Intern! In most creative industries, you won’t get your foot in the door any other way. I’d say about 95 per cent of the people you look up to in any area of the industry probably started as an intern.
What are your favourite media outlets, not including your own?
Three of your favourite accounts to follow on Instagram?
Best interview you’ve ever had?
In my role at The Kit, I don’t do a lot of interviews since I’m not on the editorial side of the magazine, but I did interview Chuck Hughes once which was amazing.
None so far!
What rule(s) do you live your life by?
Be nice to everyone.
Life is so much bigger than the little things that stress us out day-to-day (something at work, our commute, etc.).
Not having a plan for everything. Going with the flow is not something I’m good at.
A nice, cozy, rainy day.
You’re boarding a plane tomorrow. Where are you headed?
Surprise me (but make it somewhere with good food).
Style-wise, Kourtney. Personality-wise, Kylie.
Who would be cast to play you in the movie version of your life?
I’d cast myself, duh.
I recently binged Big Little Lies in one sitting, with absolutely no regrets.
Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng.
Overall, my dad. But I also look up to a lot of the women I’ve been lucky to work with/meet through my job. Whenever I get to work with women who are successful and intelligent, but also genuinely kind and down to earth, it inspires me to be like that.
Song of the moment?
Kendrick Lamar ft. SZA — “All The Stars”
